Take Care of Your Eyes
Harmful UV rays can damage your eyes. Sunglasses and safety goggles are a great way to protect your eyes. However, you should get a comprehensive eye exam. Doctors detect common vision problems and eye diseases, which usually have no early warning signs. These exams can also detect serious problems, such as retinal problems, diabetes or glaucoma, sometimes before you even know they exist!
Diet Right to Protect Your Sight
Eat to protect your eyesight. Dark leafy greens, such as kale or spinach, are packed with lutein, which is an antioxidant that helps lower the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Citrus and berries, which contain vitamin C, also help reduces the risk of macular degeneration. Fish that is high with the fatty acid omega-3, such as tuna or salmon, help reduce your risk of dry eyes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Give Your Eyes A Break
Today’s lifestyle revolves around cell phones and computer screens, so take a break from looking at small monitors. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds or more. This gives the focusing muscle a chance to relax and refocus, while reducing the symptoms of eyestrain.
Keep Your Eyes Hydrated
Maintaining the moisture level in your eyes is crucial to keeping them healthy. When you focus your eyes, whether on a computer screen or reading, you blink half the amount of times you normally do, compared to when your eyes are not concentrated. Blinking causes fresh tears to cleanse and moisten our eyes, so the more your blink, the more moisturized your eyes are. If your eyes are still dry, consider using moisturizing eye drops.
Smoking increases the risk of developing macular degeneration and optic nerve damage, which may all lead to blindness. It also increases your chances of developing cataracts. So toss out those packs for healthier eyes.
