Buffalo Horn is a material that I’ve often heard about and seen but I haven’t had the opportunity work with it until coming to Eye Elegance. It’s a material that has always intrigued me but has left me with many questions. My experience here has taught me a lot about these beautiful and exotic frames. Many of you may have the same questions about Buffalo Horn glasses, so hopefully this blog will answer them for you.
Horn eyewear is a product sold only in exclusive luxury boutiques and prices typically start over $1,000. So why is it so expensive? For starters, each horn displays unique natural colorations, which allows these frames to be truly one of a kind. Horn frames are handcrafted from multiple layers of genuine Asian water buffalo horn. These distinctively natural striations and the material’s lightweight quality make horn frames both beautiful and comfortable to wear. It’s also hypoallergenic, so it’s great for people who have allergies to certain materials.
If you’re an animal lover like me you might be concerned about how the horn is obtained. The horn can be harvested without harming the animal! Asian water buffalo are not scarce and the horn is actually plentiful. Few artisans have the skill to transform horn into eyewear though. Only the most skilled craftsmens at the best frame fabricators have the capability of carving and polishing horn materials in a manner suitable for luxury eyewear. That being said, horn frames should only be adjusted by expert opticians who are familiar with this material. Additionally, lenses should only be made by a lab with the experience, training and equipment to edge and insert lenses in horn frames.
No other frame material that has the warmth and feel of buffalo horn. The exotic look and feel of horn is what many frame designers try to achieve with acetate. Horn’s distinctive designs are for men and women looking for contemporary eyewear that is refined, striking and unique. It’s of the finest materials in eyewear and the workmanship is impeccable. Eye Elegance exclusively offers Lindberg Horn and Cartier horn.
