2017 Resolutions: Getting Your Eyes Checked

New Year’s resolutions to get healthier are pretty common, but they usually involve things like “working out” and “eating more vegetables.” For 2017, we urge you to make a different kind of healthy resolution—a resolution to get your eyes checked!

Eye health is important, but is often neglected. Many people don’t realize that things like headaches, fatigue, and even nausea can be related to eye problems.

When is the last time you had an eye exam? If you can’t remember, it’s definitely time to make an appointment! Here are some signs it might be time for a check-up:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Eye strain/fatigue
  • Increased difficulty seeing at night
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty in front of the computer/screens

Eye Exam: What to Expect

Eye Chart

If it’s been some time since your last eye exam, keep in mind that a full exam can take an hour (or more) depending on your doctor’s office, and the type and number of tests she uses during the course of the examination. A few common tests include:

  • Visual acuity testing measures vision sharpness at near and far distances;
  • Refraction uses an instrument called a phoropter, which allows the doctor to switch between lenses of different strengths to help her get your eyeglass prescription;
  • A slit-lamp exam helps your doctor examine parts of your eye using high magnification, so she can see your eyelids, iris, lens, and other areas, which helps diagnosed such issues as glaucoma, detached retinas, and other problems.

Other types of exams and tests include pupil dilation, visual field testing, and ocular motility; there is even a test to measure the vitamins mineral content of your eyes, and your doctor may tell you to start eating more eye-healthy foods, such as kale, carrots, fish, and Brussels sprouts.
